(Activity cancelled) Stop, think, verify: a hoax pool on the streets of Madrid to raise awareness about disinformation affecting migrants

On Thursday, September 8, the “hoax pool” arrives on the streets of Madrid: a ball pit container more than five meters long designed to encourage citizens to identify hoaxes and learn about tools that help stop disinformation about migrants. Behind this street action are the organizations Oxfam Intermón, Fundación Maldita.es, Mundo en Movimiento, and the Asociación de Trabajadoras del Hogar y Cuidados de Zaragoza.

This activity is part of the campaign Stop. Verify. Share., and those who come by will be able to dive into the (mis)information landscape, receive educational materials on how to avoid disinformation about migrants, and share on social media their commitment to preventing the spread of hoaxes.

On Thursday, September 8, at Plaza Santa María Soledad Torres Acosta (formerly known as Plaza de la Luna), you will be able to dive into the hoax pool and look for verified facts among the disinformation affecting migrants. From 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., a specialized team will be there providing information about the problem of disinformation and tools to counter hate speech on social media.

In the following days, the hoax pool is expected to travel to Barcelona. In addition, in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Zaragoza, posters will be displayed on several public bus lines allowing people to interact and access the campaign website, as well as use the Maldita.es WhatsApp chatbot, which provides verified information automatically.

Stop.Verify.Share offers educational content, online games, and innovative tools such as the WhatsApp chatbot (+34 644 22 93 19), where people can report possible hoaxes, verify them, and share the fact-checks. All content is available on the website https://frenayverifica.maldita.es.
