The grants from this program support journalists from the European Union and other countries to work on collaborative investigations. In the first round of grants awarded in 2021, the Maldita Tecnología project was selected along with 13 other proposals.

This fund guarantees the editorial independence of the investigations; the supported projects were selected by a jury of 5 people led by Mexican investigative journalist Lydia Cacho, to ensure the integrity of the selection process and guarantee a separation between donors and grant beneficiaries.

90% of the funds for this program are granted by the European Commission, and are awarded through a consortium of organizations led by IPI and composed of the European Journalism Centre and the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom.

An independent jury made up of editors and investigative journalists chooses the projects and maintains the integrity of the selection process by keeping a firewall between donors and IJ4EU beneficiaries.
