This year’s edition focuses on the vital importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis. During the conference, Maldita.es will contribute to a verification lab coordinated by the Arab Fact-Checkers Network (AFCN), which is part of the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) network.
During the event, 26 content creators, activists, students, journalists, and photographers will develop outreach materials on press freedom and the climate crisis, and will support other participants in drafting articles within the Multimedia Youth Space. The lab in which Maldita.es is participating—alongside fact-checkers from Lebanon (ARIJ), Chile (Fast Check), Jordan (AFCN), and Nigeria (The Cable)—will focus on verifying the content produced. The organizations will also provide fact-checking training sessions to participants.
This gathering is an initiative within the Youth Multimedia Room, coordinated by leading members of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, and the University of Chile. During the event, the organizations, in collaboration with the 26 participants, will focus on creating content to raise awareness about climate change. In addition, the lab will work on developing a pre-publication verification guide for newsroom content.
31st edition of World Press Freedom Day
As part of the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, celebrated each year on May 3, Chile and UNESCO will host the 31st World Press Freedom Day Conference from May 2 to 4, 2024. More than 40 side events will take place during the conference.
This year’s edition is dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the face of the current global environmental crisis—climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution—its connections to public health, and the need to strengthen democracy and combat disinformation.
